Northeast High School, Philadelphia, PA
Northeast High School was opened in 1894 - one of the oldest high schools in Philadelphia. In 1904, the school moved to 8th and Lehigh Ave. It was originally known as the Northeast Manual Training High School. It was a very successful high school for boys providing both academic, athletic and vocational programs that rivaled Philadelphia's Central High School.
In 1957, a brand new, co-educational Northeast High School was opened on Cottman and Algon Avenues. All of Northeast High School's sports trophies and staff was reassigned to the new Northeast High School. The alumni endowment and the association also moved. All that was left at 8th and Leihigh Ave. was the building which was renamed Thomas Edison High School. Edison remained all male until 1979, when it finally became co-ed. A new building was built in 1988 and the former Northeast High School became the deBurgo Middle School.

Northeast High School, 8th and Lehigh Ave.
When the School District of Philadelphia agreed to move Northeast High School in 1953, one reason was the building at 8th and Lehigh was hazardous. Apparently, the building was usable. It remained a public school until the mid 2000s.
Northeast High School, Cottman and Algon Ave.
The move to Cottman and Algon Ave. was very controversial because the name, traditions, staff and history of one school was moved from one neighborhood to another. The "new" location was in a European-American neighborhood. The school, which was about 50% African America and 50% European American by the mid 1950s, became nearly 100% European American. Instead of remaining an integrated school, it was segregated right after the Brown v. Board of Education federal decision.
